What You Missed at General Assembly Demo Night

I first noticed SkillSlate at VatorSplash NY. The company was one of a number of start-ups that took the stage to give their 3 minute pitch. I was impressed with the pitch and appreciated the simplicity of the SkillSlate site. A few days after VatorSplash NY, I contacted Brian Rothenberg to arrange some time so we could sit and talk a bit more about SkillSlate.

The founder's life for young VCs - 12.8.2010

In early 2009, Bartek Ringwelski was spending his days working at Canaan Partners, a venture capital firm in Westport, Connecticut, where he analyzed pitches and learned startup basics. But after he received 100 responses to a Craigslist post for a cleaning person, he began spending his nights and weekends on an idea: a startup that would rate one-person businesses, which account for at least 15% of the workforce.

In May of this year, after raising $50,000 from friends and family, Ringwelski launched SkillSlate, a site that organizes handymen, dogwalkers, massage therapists and other solos through profiles and ratings the same way dating sites corral singles.

What I Learned As A First-time Entrepreneur Raising $1M In NYC - 11.3.2010

For SkillSlate, the team behind the idea was a key reason we were able to raise capital. Think about the skills and roles that are necessary to execute your vision and get those folks involved early. Hunt them down, be persistent, and talk to as many good people as you can - you’ll be surprised how willing people are. Share your passion and communicate your vision; excitement and transparency are contagious and you’ll be surprised how many people will want to stay involved in some capacity. These are the folks who will become your advisors and supporters. Some of them may even become your team members; this is precisely how I built our core team very early on.

SkillSlate Grabs $1.1M to Find Local Service Providers - 10.20.2010

SkillSlate, a website for easily finding local service providers such as dog walkers, DJs and movers, today announced it has secured a first funding round of $1.1 million. The company plans on using the funds to expand the service outside of the New York area and add more work categories. The company has created an online directory of local service providers who can easily create a profile that includes the company’s location, contact information, prices and reviews. The profiles are made searchable by major search engines, like Google, and can help businesses who may not have a website have an online presence.
